
The oral exam is the part of the checkride most students underestimate. They prepare for the written test, they practice their maneuvers, and then they assume the oral will follow naturally from that. It doesn’t — not without specific preparation.
I’ve been an FAA-designated pilot examiner and a helicopter CFI for over 20 years. I also wrote the ASA Helicopter Oral Exam Guide series — the books examiners use as their reference during checkrides. I’ve seen oral exams from both sides of the table. Here’s what students who do well understand that the ones who struggle don’t.
The oral portion of the checkride takes place before you fly. You sit with the examiner and they question you on the same areas covered by the written test — aerodynamics, systems, regulations, weather, navigation, emergency procedures — but with two critical differences.
First, the oral is a conversation, not a multiple-choice test. The examiner asks a question, you answer, and they follow up. A correct answer to the initial question doesn’t end the line of inquiry — it usually leads to the next question. “What is settling with power?” is followed by “How would you recognize it developing?” which is followed by “What’s your recovery?” and then “At what point does recovery become impossible?”
Second, the oral probes understanding, not just facts. You can memorize that settling with power requires a specific descent rate combined with power and low airspeed. But if you don’t understand the aerodynamics behind it — why the vortices develop, why adding power makes it worse before it gets better — the examiner will find the gap. They’re specifically looking for surface-level memorization versus real understanding.
Every oral exam uses the Airman Certification Standards as its guide — the same document that governs the written test. Within that framework, certain areas come up consistently across examiners:
Emergency procedures. Autorotations, engine failure recognition, tail rotor failures, settling with power, dynamic rollover. Examiners spend significant time on emergencies because those are the situations where correct, immediate response matters most. Know the recognition signs, the immediate actions, and the aerodynamic reason each procedure works.
Weather. Not just reading METARs and TAFs — the underlying weather theory. Why does density altitude affect helicopter performance? How does a temperature inversion affect visibility? What does a rapidly falling altimeter setting tell you about conditions? Students who know how to read weather products but don’t understand the physics behind them struggle when examiners push past the surface.
Systems. Main rotor system, tail rotor, transmission, hydraulic systems, fuel system, engine instruments. The examiner wants to know you understand what each system does and what the indications of a failure look like.
Regulations. The FARs are a consistent source of questions. Currency requirements, airspace rules, equipment requirements, pilot-in-command authority and responsibility. Know the actual regulation, not just the general concept.
Weight and balance. The calculation itself, but more importantly, the consequences of being out of limits. What happens to handling characteristics with an aft center of gravity? What does exceeding maximum gross weight do to performance?
Use the ACS as your study guide. Print the Rotorcraft Helicopter Airman Certification Standards. Read every task. Every oral question traces back to a task in that document. If you can answer every question on every task — at the depth of understanding, not just the surface fact — you’ll pass the oral.
Study with the oral exam guide. The ASA Helicopter Oral Exam Guide is structured as question-and-answer pairs, organized by topic, with enough depth to show you what a complete answer looks like. It’s the reference examiners use. Using it yourself means you’re preparing at the same level your examiner is operating.
Practice explaining out loud. Reading about settling with power is not the same as explaining it. Practice answering questions out loud, as if you’re speaking to the examiner. Record yourself if that helps. The act of articulating an answer reveals gaps that silent reading misses.
Know your aircraft’s POH. Every oral exam includes questions specific to the aircraft you’ll be flying — performance charts, limitations, system descriptions from the Pilot’s Operating Handbook. Bring it to the checkride and know which sections cover what.
Have your documents in order. The oral often starts with a document review: your logbook (for required endorsements and hours), your medical certificate, your written test results, your government-issued ID. Arrive with everything organized. Starting the oral hunting for paperwork creates a poor first impression.
If you’re unsure about an answer during the oral, say so — don’t guess. Examiners can tell when a student is confident versus speculating. “I’m not certain of the exact regulation number, but my understanding is…” is a better answer than a confident wrong answer. The examiner wants to see honest self-assessment.
If the examiner finds a knowledge gap that disqualifies you from the flight portion, they’ll issue a Notice of Disapproval and you’ll reschedule the specific area that was deficient. This happens. It’s not the end of training. Many excellent pilots have had to re-address a specific oral area. What matters is that you understand the material genuinely before the next attempt.
The same knowledge base that covers the written test covers the oral. Students who truly understand the material — not just memorized answers — do better on both.
