Hey aspiring pilots! The next step in your journey is getting your Student Pilot Certificate and 3rd Class Medical Certificate. It sounds complicated, but it’s really just about filling out some paperwork and getting a quick medical exam. Let’s break it down!
First, you need to find a medical examiner in your area. Use this FAA locator to find an AME near you. The cost is typically around $100-$150, depending on the doctor.
The exam is straightforward. They generally want to make sure that you can:
See OK: Corrected vision with glasses or contacts is acceptable.
Hear OK: Some hearing loss is acceptable.
General Physical Health: Basic health checks to ensure you can safely operate an aircraft.
If you're nervous about the exam, check out this link to see what they’re looking for.
Before you head to your appointment, you’ll need to:
Create an Account on FAA's MedXPress Website: This is where you’ll fill out your medical history forms.
Fill Out Your Medical History Forms: Think of it like the paperwork you fill out at a new doctor’s office, but digital.
After you’ve filled out your information, you’ll receive a unique number (usually 12-14 digits long). Bring this number with you to your medical exam—it allows the doctor to access your medical history.
The actual medical exam will take about 1-2 hours. Experiences can vary—my longest exam was over 3 hours due to scheduling issues, but my shortest was just 38 minutes! Remember, patience is key. Every pilot started where you are right now, and no pilot particularly enjoys the medical exam process, haha.
Stay focused, you’re doing great! Every step brings you closer to your dream of becoming a helicopter pilot.
Fly safe,
Ryan
